Single Origin - Nemba, Burundi

When we tried this coffee, the body, juiciness and intense flavours made us think it was a Kenyan coffee. In truth, there are some really amazing coffees coming out of Burundi, but this one really shone for us. We tasted lots of florals, but also really lovely cacao and ripe red plum.

Information on the washing station from Collaborative Coffee, our importer:

Nemba is the youngest in Greenco’s fascinating collection of washing stations. Located in the sub-hill of Vyoga, this area is one of many in Burundi that contains remarkably fertile earth. This region has become rather wellknown for the growth of pumpkins. The cherries of this region are some of the last to ripen in the coffee season because of the desirable altitude. The station was built in response to the requests of three communes surrounding where it now stands; Kayanza, Matongo and Muruta.

Muruta commune is particularly well known amongst the people of the area as the name is a Kirundi word meaning “superior.” The old King, Mwezi the second, favored the area for its sweet honey, vast amounts of cattle and sorghum plant. The King also had it declared that his Queens would be buried here upon their deaths and to this day, four tombs of his late Queens can be found in the commune.

Price paid to farmer*: $1.99 USD/lb

Processing and Export costs: $1.01 USD/lb

Transport and Finance: $0.30 USD/lb

Our Price: $4.20 USD/lb

* This price is the Farmgate price. The price usually listed by a roaster is often paid to the exporter or the mill, and only about half of that gets back to the farmer once everyone else takes a cut. This equates to a price of about $3.00 USD/lb paid for the coffee, when purchased from the washing station and including export costs to get it to the US.

A note on roast dates:

Contrary to most coffee myths (based off old information), it's best not to use coffee that is too fresh. For espresso, we recommend using coffee between three days to four weeks old, while filter and drip coffee it's best if the beans are three weeks to twelve weeks from the date of roasting.

If you would like your coffee already rested, please let us know in the comment section of your order and we will do our best to fulfill your order with rested coffee, if we have it available. Please note that based on fluctuating order amounts, we won't always have rested coffee available at the time you order, and you are welcome to reach out to us to check on our inventory levels for rested coffee before ordering.
